Unfaithful

i would like to address the following comment to the woman in the movie:

you stupid, stupid woman. first of all, if i were going to cheat on my husband and risk ruining my marriage, it would be with someone way more attractive than dirty city book boy. second, if my husband were richard gere, well, then all bets are off, you know? what are you nuts? your husband is richard gere. and it's not like they made him out to be an ass. i don't get it! why would you cheat on richard gere with d.c.b.b.? i don't get it at all!

but the movie (other than the uncomprehensible choosing to sleep with d.c.b.b instead of richard gere) was rather good. i liked. except the end. it kind of left it up in the air. i know there was the theme of the decisions you make (like her taking the cab vs going up with d.c.b.b) effecting your life, and you're left to decide which decision they make, but for crying out loud, it's a movie, you know? i have enough of my own decisions to make in real life. spell it out for me in the movies!

and don't cheat on richard gere.

Signs

two words - mel gibson

ok but about the movie. oh forget the movie - mel gibson was in it - go rent it. i know he's like old enough to be my father, but who cares. he's mel gibson.

one word of advice. if you did not like the sixth sense and unbreakable, do not rent this movie. i thought it was very good (mel gibson), but it was weird (twisty-weird) like those two movies. and i thought it was much more religious than sci-fi. but i got over it because, well, mel gibson, you know?

The Hot Chick

i really had high hopes for this movie. silly me. i don't know...maybe it was the fact that we had just finished power hour and ten minutes. maybe it was the fact that it came after jackass and super troopers which were both hysterical. but this movie was BAD! like stick-myself-in-the-eye-with-a-pencil bad. or slit-my-wrists-to-put-me-out-of-my-misery bad.

that's all i have to say about the movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

yo ho yo ho a pirates' life for me...

i'm so glad they made a movie of my favorite ride of all time. i really didn't think this movie was going to be much of anything except eye candy, which is the only reason i went. i mean, what kind of a movie is based on a ride. it's bad enough when they base them on books, let alone a ride...

but i was wrong. yes there was some pretty nice eye candy. johnny depp was never my type, but you can't deny his good looks. and orlando bloom. oh my goodness i'm feeling flushed. let me sit down for a second. ok orli - when will you come to your senses and let me bear your children? you are 4 months younger than me, and as an older and wiser person i'm telling you, you don't want any of those hollywood types. you want ME.

back to the movie. the eye candy was not all male. keira whats-her-face looked pretty good in this movie (according to darren). not the same person as that beckham movie. not at all. and i'm pretty sure the sparks flew between her and orlando, but i'm not sure. that may have been the sparks that were flying between him and me.

but i digress again. the movie was great. i love pirates, but even if you don't there's plenty of humour and swordfighting and cleavage to suit your fancy. johnny depp absolutely made this movie (i'm sorry orli). he was hysterical as captain jack sparrow. hysterical. he had a certain flourish about him that at times was so completely obsurd you just had to laugh. ("it's 'captain' - 'captain jack sparrow'). and some times he was so out of touch with the reality of the situation, you just had to laugh ("yes, but why the rum??") i loved him in this movie. if i wasn't laughing at him, i was swooning over orlando bloom, who, admittedly, was completely overshadowed by the enormous character of depp. but he is young yet. johnny has years of experience under his belt. and he is truly an amazing actor. he definitly has found his niche with the characters and roles he's been picking lately.

so as a final note - go see this movie. get over the fact that it's based on a ride at disney. take that out of the equasion - it's a great movie. lots of fun. and if you like the ride, you'll be very happy to see scenes from the ride in the movie. if you think it's stupid to make a movie based on a ride - i didn't just say that.

Finding Nemo

four words. go see this movie. --- go! right now! stop reading and go.
ok, you don't listen to me. or maybe you've already seen the movie. it was superb. pixar is the new disney. ok. technically pixar is disney i guess, but whatever. and can i just say that i love ellen degeneres. and i mean that in a completely heterosexual platonic way. she was hysterical in this movie. take her forgetful fish alter-ego and add a couple of sharks that are "on the wagon" (that would be the non-fish-eating-wagon), and a totally stoked turtle dude, and you have one hell of a movie. well, the cliff clavin school of fish was pretty good too. i think someone at pixar has a thing for him, he keeps ending up in their movies.

i usually go for the movies with at least 1 hot guy (2 being the most recent trend), but for not having any eye candy, this movie was still wonderful.

The Good Girl

let me start off by saying that i like jennifer aniston. i also think john c. reilly is pretty funny. that being said i would like to quote darren about this movie in saying "well there's two hours of my life i'll never get back"

in a word...terrible! first of all - real life sucks enough. i don't want to watch a movie about people whose lives basically suck, you know? ok i know that something bad (conflict) has to happen to the main character in order to create a plot, but that's not what i'm talking about. i'm talking about lives that just really really suck. jennifer aniston is a store clerk who is married to john c. reilley who is a painter and is always stoned with his painter friend. she meets another clerk, who is played by some new guy in hollywood who is supposed to be the next best thing, but he's not all that good looking. she sleeps with him, then sleeps with the husband's painter friend then her clerk friend gratuitously dies, then her boy toy kills himself and she's pregnant and her husband is infertile. (do the math) luckily he's stupid enough NOT to do the math, and they live, well, just-as-miserably-as-before ever after.

darren is no longer allowed to pick movies.

Ghost Ship

for all of you that are laughing at me right now for watching this movie (ha - i say that as if i am delusional enough to think that people read this), shut up. i did not rent it because i thought it was going to be an inspired piece of cinema. i rented for one reason and one reason alone - karl urban.

for those of you that missed my glowing review of lord of the rings - the two towers, you are probably unaware of my .. um .. deep admiration for the acting abilities of mr urban. ok - i'll get real. he's pretty. i rented ghost ship because karl urban is pretty. get over it.

i was afraid it was going to be scary. it was not scary. so if you are looking for a scary movie, this is not it. and for me to say a movie is not scary, it's pretty tame. how tame? lets just say that i had nightmares after harry potter. that's right. harry potter. shut up.

and karl urban's character lived until almost the end, so that was good, because if he had been killed off in the beginning i would have been rather upset.

but i'm kind of torn on the storyline. it was a ghost story (duh), but it was a stretch even for a ghost story. and it left it open-ended (one of my main problems with scary movies). i don't want to recommend it, because i don't want to be responsible for people wasting their time, but if you have nothing else to rent, go for it. i will give it that it was intriguing. when you found out the deal with what was going on, it was kind of like "aaaaaah - now it all makes sense!" plus. karl urban is pretty.

MIB 2

no, i did not intentionally go out and watch this movie. it was on tv. so i decided to check it out and see how bad it actually was. it wasn't as bad as everyone said. i wouldn't watch it again, but it wasn't that bad the first time around.

it at least had a plot. sort of. i think it was the same plot as the first movie, but it was at least a plot. sort of.

the dog was funny

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

i had heard this movie reviewed as "how to lose a guy by bringing him to a terrible chick flick". that just goes to show you how very wrong 'real' critics can be. this was a great fluff date movie. you know how i am about chemistry and kate hudson and matthew mcconaughey had great chemistry. it was funny how over the top she was with all the "fatal flaws" that women commit in relationships. any woman that goes to this movie and says that she hasn't exhibited some, or at least a variation, of this behavior is lying! and any man that says he hasn't been in a relationship where the woman has committed some of these faux pas is oblivious.

overall, a nice movie where you don't have to think too much. it had a predictible ending, but in the world we currently live in where nothing is foreseeable, it was comforting. and that's what you want from a movie anyway. i left the theater feeling good about myself, and laughing a little at myself, as i realized how many silly things we all do in our relationships. a few times darren looked over at me and laughed, because i had done something similar to kate hudson's character.

bottom line - a must see for happy couples, a must see for women who don't understand why men keep leaving them, and a must see for men who are too picky and think that if a woman exhibits one of these characteristics, she should be thrown away. and a must see for everyone else who wants a good laugh and wants to leave the theater happy.

Just Married

this movie is what i like to call a "no-brainer". you don't have to think too hard, you just watch and (hopefully) enjoy. which is just what i did. ashton kutcher and brittany "i'll never tell" murphy turned in wonderfully convincing performances as a newlywed couple. a few gems that came out of their mouths during the movie i shamefully remember uttering myself on or around my wedding day. (i was horrified to think my parents knew i...well...you know).

but the movie went from the familiar to the absurd, which made it all the more funny. the poor-boy, rich-girl thing has been done a million times. (cough cough titanic), but this movie put just the right amount of focus on that and didn't try to put it off as if all the problems they were facing were because of their financial background. it came into play, as it would in real life, but it wasn't "oh look at me, i'm stupid because i'm poor". they made sure that it was "oh look at me, i'm ashton kutcher, and by nature stupid" ashton honey - i don't know you, i don't know how intelligent you are, but if you keep taking stupid roles, well, it's going to start making people wonder. and punk'd doesn't help. and please get a haircut. oh jeez i sound like someeone's mother.

so on that lovely note, i will leave you.

The Core

ok, be honest. who all wanted to see another "end of the world" movie. i thought we were done with those after deep impact and armageddon. alright. i actually did. i saw the previews and i wanted to see this movie. i'll admit it. it looked good. and when we finally got around to renting it, i was not disappointed.

yes, maybe some (some-all) parts were a little predictable. and we all know that sfx people love to blow stuff up gratuitously, but the movie had a cool story to go along with it. i don't know how plausable it was, but give me a break, it's sci fi.

so anyway, characters, hilary swank is a co-pilot, or whatever the astronaut version of that is, who is the youngest person in space, but is not getting her chance to be a leader. enter captain/pilot actor-i-don't-know, which, sorry buddy, probably means you are going to die. he dispenses some advice about how you can't be a good leader until you fail at something. ok now you are definitely going to die, because that means she is going to fail and then be a leader. sorry. go buy the plot now, it will be cheaper.

then there is the harvard professor who figures out this whole thing because some people with pacemakers died and some birds had a hissy. man i wish i was that smart. he's like the macgyver of figuring things out. honestly, the fact that he knew that all the people that died had pacemakers and that this was connected to the birds was just creepy. nobody is that smart. and if you are that smart, why aren't you figuring out important things like how to fix this crappy economy.

again, digress. so then there's the french guy. not gerard depardeux (however you spell it), but the other french guy that's in everything. he's got 2 kids and a wife. i'll just sign the death certificate now. oh right, and he's the only one that really knows how to work the nukes that's going to save the planet. yeah. you're done for.

enter the scientist-cum-politician? stanley tucci. you're an ass and you smoke. you're going to die.

big black man who designed the ship. his life's dream was to see his plans for this ship realized. yeah. guess what. you're dead too.

so just how predictable was this movie? well, obviously they have to go into the center of the earth. and obviously since mr-harvard-teacher and ms swank have want-to-get-it-on vibes since moment 1 they are going to survive. but just so that we don't think the mission was too easy, they have to kill everyone else off. and as an example of predictability - they were in a giant geode in the mantle of the earth (for those of you who don't know what that is - go back to 2nd grade science). they were going on about how inpenetrable a geode is and that is why the magma is not getting in. i turn and say "yes, but they're inside it now, so there's a hole. the magma is going start coming in" and no sooner did i say that but plop - magma. yeah i'm good.

but still, if you can get over the predictability, it was a good movie. i would recommend it.

Mr Deeds

so country bumpkin adam sandler's uncle that he doesn't know dies at the top of mount everest or something and he inherits the company. wow. what a funny premise for a movie. country boy goes to new york and gets taken advantage of? what an original concept!

all that aside, winona rider actually doesn't look bad in this movie. i usually don't like her, but i think it's the blonde hair. adam sandler's black foot is disgusting, but i think it's supposed to be. and it has the guy from center stage in it, who i supposedly like.

she plays him for a fool and they still end up together in the end? awww... you just gotta love hollywood.

Two Weeks Notice

i actually liked this movie. i know - wow. but it was a cute little chick flick and you found yourself actually wanting the two main characters to get togheter. well i love sandra bullock, but hugh grant is not my favorite of actors. but he was terrific in this movie, and actually very cute.

recently i have found the chemistry between the main actors in movies severely lacking, to say the least. i have more chemistry with my cubicle than meg ryan and hugh jackman had in kate and leopold. i watched it 4 times anyway since he's so hot. but i digress. what was my point? ah yes - chemistry. the chemistry betweeh hugh and sandra was wonderful. which, as i said before, is rare as of late. the story moved well, and it was just very enjoyable.

i would definitely recommend this as a date movie, or a date rental. it was pretty predictable, but compelling, nonetheless.

Anger Management

this movie bothered me. from the beginning. it was supposed to be funny, but it bothered me. i couldn't figure out why it seemed like the whole world was out to get poor adam sandler. when they were in the car singing "i feel pretty" i was like "why are they making him do that". apparently this movie was funny. i missed that. i wasn't laughing. i was very concerned for this poor man.

ok - so in the end it's all explained, but that's too late. i already missed laughing at the jokes because i was worried. thanks

Cocktail

tom cruise and "ali with an i" were in this movie. tom cruise has a big nose. i was absolutely in love with him when i was younger, and he is very attractive, but i never realized how big his nose was. and i also want to say that elizabeth shue was a refreshing change to the anorexic waifs that are in movies today.

yes, this was my first time seeing cocktail. somehow it escaped me when it came out. i have the soundtrack, and it's awesome. my parents probably didn't let me see this one because of drinking or sex or something. so it was on tv last night and i watched it. tv is funny. you see the actors' mouths saying one thing, and you hear something else. very entertaining.

so it was a cute movie. i liked it. i don't know what else to say. everyone else on the planet probably already saw it, so this is pretty much useless writing this.

Bringing Down the House

two words - skip it.

i like queen latifa. i think she is very funny. somehow, she fell flat in this movie. (imagine that - someone referring to her as flat - ha!) but anyway - it just wasn't funny. i can't tell you why - i can't tell you how - because steve martin is usually in decent movies too. and i fought with darren to see this movie and yet again, he was right. the only reason this movie was not a complete and total waste of my time was because i gave myself a manicure while watching it.

the only funny parts were when the stuffy rich old lady was stoned. the rest was kind of ho-hum. totally predictable. yes, he gets back with his wife at the end. and gives up his big-deal law job to open a private practice. wait. i think i saw this one already. it was called liar liar and jim carrey was much funnier.

so if you are dying to see this movie, rent it, but make sure you have something else to do to occupy your time (and your mind) while watching it.

Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers

ok - so my review for this movie has got to be twofold. because there is so much i want to say about the actual movie - the plot, the filming, the character devopment - and yet, there is so much i want to say about the fact that there are four - count them four - beautiful men in this movie.

lets start with the movie. as the second part of a trilogy i expected dark, but it was not as dismal and depressing as, say, empire strikes back. at the end of the movie, you are filled with apprehension, but not the feeling of defeat. (yes we know the good guys always win, but how depressing was it when lukes hand got cut off, han solo was frozen in carbonite, and leia lost her danishes). ok so i know it's become cliche to compare this to star wars, but i just wanted a point of reference that everybody knows. and if you don't know star wars, get out from under your rock.

but, as usual, i digress. after seeing the first installment, i did read the trillogy of books by j.r.r. tolkien. so although i had no point of reference while watching the first movie, i had already read the book when i watched this one. i was a bit afraid that it would not live up to the book, as movies have a hard time doing so, but it was every bit as wonderful as i could have imagined. they obviously had to cut a lot of scenes out, but i was glad to see that in the "special edition dvd" they will be putting some of that back. all of the actors did a bang-up job and i have to give props to the crew too, because the cinematography was wonderful.

so now i get to my favorite part. the men. :) i don't believe i have ever seen another movie with so many beautiful men. (i'm sure there's one out there - i just haven't seen it). for those of you who are not red-blooded females, the men i am referring to are viggo mortensen (aragorn), orlando bloom (legolas), karl urban (eomer) and david wenham (faramir). i felt like a kid in a candy shop. i'm getting completely spoiled. i used to get excited when there were two hot guys in a movie - now i'm saying "oh - only two? pity."

i would gladly take home any of these guys. i almost didn't know where to look when they were in the riddermark and the three of them were all there. oh i sound like i'm 13 again. look at what they reduce me to. so i guess i will end this with a message to hollywood execs: more hot men in movies please. and here's my message to peter jackson and whoever casted lord of the rings: superb job!
